Wheat marketing year runs June to May. Annual figures are USDA weighted-average prices received by farmers for all wheat classes.

The most recent year may be preliminary or a USDA forecast. Prices are nominal (not adjusted for inflation). Checked for updates every weekday; USDA updates these tables monthly.

Key Moments in Wheat Price History

  • 1917–1919: World War I demand pushed wheat above $2 a bushel, a level not seen again for decades.
  • 1973–1974: large export sales and poor world crops more than doubled wheat prices.
  • 2007–2008: droughts in major exporting countries and export bans lifted prices sharply.
  • 2022: the war in Ukraine, a major wheat exporter, drove prices to a record season average.

How to Use Wheat Price History

  • The all-wheat average mixes hard red winter, soft red winter, hard red spring, white and durum wheat. Each class trades at a different price.
  • Prices are often lowest around the summer harvest (June–August for winter wheat).
  • These are nominal prices, not adjusted for inflation.

FAQ

What is the highest wheat price in history?

The highest US all-wheat season-average price received by farmers was in 2022/23, after the start of the war in Ukraine. See the record card above for the figure.

Why do wheat prices change so much?

Wheat is grown and traded worldwide, so weather in Russia, Europe, Australia, Argentina and Canada, export restrictions and the value of the US dollar all move US prices.

Where does this data come from?

USDA Economic Research Service Wheat Data, Table 18, based on NASS Agricultural Prices.

How often is this page updated?

We check USDA’s tables every weekday and update when new data is published.
