Why Hog Prices Swing

  • Seasonality: hog prices usually peak in summer, when fewer hogs are ready for market and grilling demand is high, and dip in late fall.
  • Feed costs: corn and soybean meal make up most of the cost of raising a hog. See corn price history.
  • Exports and disease: African swine fever in China (2018–2019) and trade disputes caused big swings, and COVID-19 plant closures in 2020 briefly crashed prices.
