Understanding Soybean Prices

  • Cash price: what Iowa elevators and processors bid today for No. 1 yellow soybeans.
  • Futures: CBOT soybean contracts trade for January, March, May, July, August, September and November delivery. In the tables, “X” marks the November contract.
  • Bushel: a bushel of soybeans weighs 60 lb (27.2 kg). One metric tonne is about 36.7 bushels.
  • Crush value: most soybeans are crushed into meal (animal feed) and oil (food and biodiesel), so meal and oil prices pull soybean prices up or down.

What Moves Soybean Prices

  • Export demand, especially purchases by China
  • Crop size in Brazil, the world’s largest soybean exporter
  • USDA WASDE and acreage reports
  • Biofuel policy, which drives soybean oil demand
  • August weather, when soybean pods fill
